The Incredible Story of the WashPak: The Reinvented Jerrycan
The WashPak: a durable, eco-friendly portable washing station with roots in WWII jerrycans and modern innovation.

After WWII, U.S. troops left behind jerrycans, once used for fuel. Across Europe, people repurposed them into grills, tools, and building materials. In Slovakia, families used them with military helmets to make improvised washing stations.

In the late 1940s, a Slovak company began adapting jerrycans into a multifunctional hygiene tool. With a metal hose and soap dispenser, it became a self-contained washing station. Thus, the WashPak was born — a symbol of resilience and ingenuity.

During the 1960s, the WashPak continued to evolve in response to emerging needs. In particular, it gained popularity within the caravanning community, where its practical design was highly valued. Nevertheless, it always retained the ingenious spirit that had inspired its original creation.
By the late 1980s, the advent of plastic and the rise of disposable, single-use solutions marked a significant turning point. As a consequence, traditional washing systems became fragmented and were replaced by interchangeable pouches, seen as more modern and economical. The washing station jerrycan, once praised for its robustness and durability, gradually faded into obscurity in a world increasingly driven by throwaway culture.

In 2009, two Slovak engineers, Pavol Bella and Martin Štefanko, revived the WashPak. Redesigned using recycled polymer, it preserved its simplicity and durability. This revival struck a balance between innovation and sustainability, while staying true to its ingenious origins.
